The Difference Between Climate-Controlled Storage and Temperature-Controlled Storage
January 3, 2020 3:56 pm Leave your thoughtsThere may come a time when your business has a bit too much inventory to store on site. If these goods are sensitive to temperature, then your best option is to rent space in a warehouse that caters to your specific needs. Sometimes, it’s your personal belongings that need an off-site place to stay for a while. Either situation calls for a solid understanding of what you need and the storage solutions available to you.
In your research, you’ve probably come across the terms “climate control” and “temperature control.” Whether geared toward personal or commercial goods, these terms are often used interchangeably. However, the two types of storage are very different from one another. For the sake of the safety of your goods or belongings, you must make the right storage solution choice from the start.
Below is a look at the main differences between climate-controlled storage and temperature-controlled storage in Minnesota.
Traditional storage
Before we break down climate- and temperature-controlled storage, let’s run through the basics of traditional storage. Traditional storage solutions usually don’t provide control over the climate or temperature of the unit or warehouse space. This option is best used for short-term storage needs and household items, but generally works well in geographic areas with mild to moderate climates. Normal temperatures inside this type of storage area are a few degrees cooler than outside in the summer, and a few degrees warmer in the winter.
Temperature-controlled storage
If you don’t think your goods will fair too well in a traditional storage setting, then you might consider temperature-controlled storage. Warehouses set up for this type of storage are made to be able to control the temperature within a range of several degrees. For instance, the outside temperature may be 90 degrees, so the inside of the temperature-controlled warehouse may be kept around 80 degrees. The same applies to when winter comes. On average, temperature-controlled storage facilities can hold a temperature between 55 and 80 degrees.
Choose this solution for long-term storage, protection during temporary storage, storage in transit or if you need items protected from extreme temperatures. Temperature-controlled storage is designed to protect particular items, including art, appliances, electronics, leather furniture, photographs, collectibles and more.
Climate-controlled storage
Another storage option offered by storage companies is climate-controlled storage, which is ideal for goods that need extra protection and care. It offers the maximum level of protection to items such as fine art, musical instruments, wood furniture, antiques and books, as having control over the interior climate means having a better handle on the right humidity levels in a storage area. Climate control can deter mold and mildew, which is detrimental to fabric, wood and a range of other materials. Serious dampness will likely damage certain items past the point of no return.
