Happy Brake Safety Week, everybody! From September 6-12, people across the entire country will come together to talk about, celebrate and practice brake safety, and you do not have to be a part of any special club to join in. As a trucking company in Minnesota, we here at K-Way Express, Inc. cannot stress the importance of brake safety enough, and we want to spread valuable knowledge to all of our customers and friends. Here are just a few different ways you and your loved ones can celebrate Brake Safety Week this September 6 through 12:
- Know the signs: Whether you have been driving for 50 years or just got your license, it never hurts to refresh yourself on the different signs that something is wrong with your vehicle. When it comes to brakes, the signs are not difficult to spot: strange noises, less sensitivity in your brake pedals and taking longer to slow down are all obvious signals that you need to have your breaks checked right away. And of course, the red BRAKE light coming on next to your engine light is also an obvious sign that something is not right.
- Maintenance: As a trucking company in Minnesota, we know all about the importance of brake maintenance, as brake malfunction is a major cause of trucking accidents in the U.S. Even if your brakes seem to be working fine, you should have them routinely checked at least once a year to make sure no problems are lurking beneath the surface. In addition to having them checked, request a general tune up for your brake pads, pedals and gears. When it comes to brakes, it is always better to be safe than to be sorry.
- Spread the word: Knowing the importance of brake safety for yourself is great, but the information is even more useful when you spread it to others. Start small, by making sure your spouse and kids are as vigilant about brake safety as you are. If you want to branch out further, start a friendly reminder email chain with any friends who are interested. Once one person speaks up, the ball will keep on rolling.
- Ask a professional: Finally, if you would like to learn more about the finer points of brake safety, it is time to ask a professional. The next time you are at the mechanic’s shop, ask if there is anything you should know or do to better care for your brakes. Brake accidents are even more prevalent with truckers, so if you or a loved one is a truck driver, make sure they have the proper information and training to handle brake safety. As a trucking company in Minnesota, we can tell you that the gesture is always appreciated.
